NC Motorcycle Insurance

You may be itching to get those two wheels out on the open road, but first you’ll want to make sure you have the right auto insurance coverage for you and your bike.
Most states require you
Most states require you to carry at least the minimum limits of financial responsibility on your motorcycle. The minimum required Motorcycle insurance is usually the same minimum that is required for a car. Depending on the auto insurance company, motorcycle insurance can cover the follow types of bikes: scooters, dirt bikes, classic motorcycles, mopeds, motocross bikes, or trike bikes. Also depending on the company, the policy may be a specifically designed motorcycle policy, but it can also be in the form of an endorsement that is attached to an automobile insurance policy.
Motorcycle Bodily Injury Coverage
Motorcycle bodily injury liability coverage will help pay for the medical and related expenses if you cause bodily injuries to another person while operating your bike. This liability coverage can also pay for your legal defense if you are sued as a result of the injuries you cause. States that require bodily injury liability coverage will require that you keep a minimum limit but you could also purchase higher limits if your needs and budget allows.
Motorcycle Passenger Coverage
In some states, motorcycle guest passenger liability coverage is a separate coverage from bodily injury liability. This coverage will help pay for medical and related expenses if a passenger on your covered motorcycle is injured or dies as a result of an accident that you cause.
Motorcycle Property Damage Coverage
Motorcycle property damage liability coverage will help pay to repair or replace the damage you cause to another person’s property while operating your bike. This liability coverage can also pay for your legal defense if you are sued as a result of the damage you cause. States that require property damage liability coverage will require that you keep a minimum limit but you could also purchase higher limits if your needs and budget allows.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
It will help protect you if you are involved in an accident while riding your bike that is caused by an uninsured driver.
Comprehensive Coverage
Pays for loss or damage to your motorcycle from theft, vandalism, flood, fire or other covered disasters.
Collision Coverage
Pays for loss or damage to your motorcycle as a result of colliding with another object or the vehicle overturning.

Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE) Coverage

If you purchase comprehensive and/or collision coverage for your bike, in most states there is typically some coverage for CPE. The limits for this coverage vary by state and by company. You usually can purchase additional CPE coverage to cover your motorcycle equipment. Again, the limits offered for additional CPE will vary from company to company but typically range between $15,000 and $30,000.

CPE covers special equipment, devices, accessories, and modifications you add to your bike that weren’t originally installed by the manufacturer. These can include:

  • Electronic equipment that is permanently installed on your bike
  • Sidecars (when attached to the bike)
  • Trailers designed to be pulled behind a motorcycle (when attached to the bike)
  • Trike conversion kits
  • Custom paint, custom plating or custom exhaust
  • Saddlebags
  • Safety riding apparel, including helmets (The coverage limit for safety apparel is often limited and typically will not apply to theft.)

Motorcycle Replacement Coverage

It’s an optional coverage that is offered by some car insurance companies. In the case that you total your bike in a covered accident, this coverage will enable you to replace it with a new one of the same kind and quality.
